FAQs/About the Lexicon

The Set Lighting Lexicon began as a Facebook Group in 2018 after IATSE Local 52 Electric permits and the author applied for membership. The group's sole purpose was for the author to organize meetups at Equipment Rental Houses to study, and for the dissemination of "study guides" created by the author. The study guides would eventually become the current version we see today.

If you are a manufacturer or representative of one and wish to have your products/images removed, or added for that matter, please contact me at MichaelCarbone9052@gmail.com and I will happily remove, create or modify the chapter for your company's equipment into this ongoing project.

What is a Lexicon? What is this book about?

A lexicon is a list of names used in the vocabulary of a given branch of knowledge or used by a group of people. In this instance; Set Lighting Equipment. There are many educational resources for this topic: Harry C. Box's Set Lighting Technician's Handbook is what we traditionally use. This is fine if you only want to learn about how we do the job. The Lexicon is special in that it is a visual catalog and fully searchable document containing only tables of images and data about equipment, which is immediately pertinent to lighting professionals. My coworkers and I use it as a reference frequently when we are on set.

How do I know that this information is correct!?

Don't take my word for it, every chapter is checked for accuracy by the manufacturers and given their blessing.

How often is the Lexicon updated?

Seasonally, after new equipment is witnessed and cataloged.

You're using copyrighted images!

Yes, and I have acquired permission from every manufacturer in order to do so. As such, each image is listed with "Images courtesy of (insert manufacturer)" as per the general agreement. With some of them, I signed release forms as a formality for their company. Every time I update the book, it is my honor and sometimes contractual obligation to consult with the manufacturers and let them know what changes will be made, and if they have any recommendations. When I take all of these copyrighted images, and combine them into one catalog, it becomes a new intellectual property.

I found a mistake!

Thank you! Sorry about that. I'm not omniscient or a perfect person. I've spent a lot of time making sure that all of the information is accurate and formatted in a way that's organized and easy to interpret for everyone.
